The number of people that take heart to sink in the transparent waters of Cordillera’s lakes to practice what is know as snorkelling has largely increased over the time. Some of the most famous Nahuel Huapi’s arms are chosen places to practise this activity. Near Villa La Angostura, you get to Traful that is a unique place to discover through blue depths of Bosque Sumergido (Submerged Woods).
The diving season extends from November until April, being able to practise it all the year round using dry suits.
The favourite places are the Bosque Sumergido in Villa Traful and El Destino Bay and Cataratas Brook’s beaches, since the sub aquatic platform is high and allows a good visibility. The excursions depart usually from Villa Traful’s dock, going across Lake Nahuel Huapi up to the chosen destinations.
All the diving activity is developed in one of the most attractive landscapes in Argentina. The Lake Nahuel Huapi offers us a big variety: big rocks that form authentic submerged mountains, walls that descend to the bottom, forests of ancient trees and mountainsides that submerged and get lost in the deep crystalline water; these are some of the sub aquatic scenes offered by this activity.
The lack of big waves or strong winds allows you to enjoy diving from the departure at the ports up to the immersion points.
Diving Baptism in Lake Nahuel Huapi
High mountainsides that together with their forests sink, getting lost at the lake’s bottom and rocky walls, carved by the Ice Age, that descend vertinously, become the scene that A.S.A.P. V.L.A. Diving Centre makes possible to appreciate in Nahuel Huapi’s depths.
Before starting, it is important to refuse the idea about Nahuel Huapi’s cold water, its temperature is not different from the one in Valdez Peninsula area (diving birthplace in Argentina) because in summer we measure at the surface temperatures between 16º and 18º C and 20 metres in depth 14º C approximately: what allows all the sub aquatic activities to be comfortably practised with the thermic protection the school has.
After a short introductory talk, the tour starts from the dock towards the chosen destination. The navigation across the lake up to the immersion points is always pleasant; the lack of big waves or strong winds allows us to enjoy diving from the start point at the ports.
The De la Guardia Islands are some of the characteristic points we visit, because the sub aquatic conditions of the environment make the learning easy and make the immersion to be an unforgettable encounter between the diver and the environment.
The diving instructor accompanies us all the time, giving us a personalized attention and making us feel the support in this new experience, where the weightlessness feeling and the pleasure of perpetual silent will surprise us from the moment we start breathing under the water. From there, we will descend along rocky walls, discovering the forms that have been contoured by the glaciers pass, going over almost all the islands’ extension.
The lake’s water transparency gives us a visibility between 15 and 20 metres, what allows us to admire a big range of salmons and their small salmons, velvety catfishes, puyenes and perches, and also invertebrate species as iglas, diplodocus, quelinas and samastacus.
After 20 to 30 minutes of immersion we come back to the boat, we take the equipments off, make ourselves comfortable and enjoy the navigation back to the port.
