It extends through out 750.000 ha., of which 330.000 belong to the national reserve.
It is 155 kilometres long, measured in a north-south direction over The Andes, at the Argentinean-Chilean frontier, and has a maximum width of 75 km.

Because of its scenic and ecological value, it protects an extensive area representative of the Andean region of Patagonia’s North.
It is located in the south-west of Neuquén Province and north-west in Río Negro Province.

Towards the north, it joins with Lanín National Park and, towards the west, with various protected areas in Chile, what creates a very big protected space of exceptional value to conservation.
It was created in 1934 by law 12.103. The generous donation made by Francisco Pascasio Moreno on November 6th 1903, constitutes one of the central points that contributes to Nahuel Huapi National Park later creation.
You access there by National Route Nº 237. In the south side of the National Park there’s an access to San Carlos de Bariloche through National Route Nº 258.

The climate in Nahuel Huapi Park is specially influenced by wet winds that come from the South Pacific. When they face with The Andes’ barrier, these winds go up abruptly and they get cold because of the height, condensing its humidity in sudden rains.

For this reason the rains reach their maximum intensity at the side of the mountains located in the west side of the park, decreasing abruptly to the east. The most rainy area is the one of Blest port and Frías Lagoon, where it rains over 4000 mm annually, while 60 km. from there, in the east zone of the park, it only rains 400 mm.

Regarding the temperature, the weather is lukewarm. As a consequence of the protection against winds and cold that hills offer to some valleys, it is very common to find microclimates in almost every lake of the area. Bariloche city has a further continental climate, the temperatures and winds are very rigorous.

By air you can arrive at San Martín de los Andes’ airport or at San Carlos de Bariloche’s one.

From San Martín de los Andes by National Route Nº 234 and National Route Nº231, communication route known as “Camino de los Site Lagos” (Siete Lagos Route). Another access mode from San Martín de los Andes is by Provincial Route Nº 63.

From Chile
you ou arrive through the frontier passages: one by land -by National Route Nº 231-, Puyehue Passage; and the other one by lake, through Pérez Rosales Passage.
